SEF URLs in Joomla! 1.5 core!

Well, it looks like the dev's heard the people, and gave them what they asked for:
much better URLs as a core functionality!
It's a bit hidden, and you'll need two steps to see the effect:
  1. activate SEF in Global Configuration (make sure .htaccess is ok)
  2. Go to Plugin Manager => System Request Plugin, and set "Build with real names" to yes as per above.
Then, check out the com_content URLs on your test-site ;)

Thanks guys ;)

Sounds like a winner.

Joe - thanks for this. Blogged it up, too, referencing your site.

On a "perhaps" related note: I've been wondering what is going on with OpenSEF. KenMcD's been gone since early November and Marko has not been on his forums since late November. People are asking but, no one is saying a word. Hope Ken is well.

Joe -

Although, I think that the SEF URL capability is a *bit* better in J! v 1.5 than it is in native J! v 1.0.x now, we are not quite there.
Today, Marko announced that OpenSEF *will* continue to be provided because the improvements won't quit be enough.

Also, Hannes made a similar comment in the Google Dev area today the suggested the same.

I don't think we are there, yet. I updated my blog, as well.

Nice interview in Brian's newsletter, btw! Love it - good for Brian!

OK. Keep up the good work!
Amy :)

Would you have found it under "System Request Plugin" ? I know I wouldn't have..

Anyhow, good to see it having some positive advances, even if the usability isn't up to scratch.

See demo.smartsef.org This is a demo of URL rewriting a 1.5

Smartsef has announced that they will release a SEF url rewriting component for 1.5 soon.

Ummm, don't see that plugin listed in my Joomla 1.5 Plugin Manager. What am I doing wrong?

There is one called System - SEF which is enabled but SEF isn't working.

Has anyone had any luck getting this to work on Pair's servers. I have a clean install of Joomla 1.5 which works fine without SEF URLs. Once I turn on the mod_rewrite functionality it no longer works...

I'm running into the same thing as alc. On a very fresh install of Joomla 1.5 and do not see the "System Request Plugin" option anywhere. I also have System - SEF enabled, although I'm unsure of its purpose so unable to comment on functionality.

This is not working for me neither (I have Joomla 1.5). The plug in doesn't appear in the list.

Yes, I also cannot activate SEF in Joomla 1.5.7. Where is this module anyway?
